Friday Focus - Core Values of Buffalo Grove HS
Last night, Buffalo Grove hosted the District 214 Board of Education workshop. It was a great chance to share with the board some of the many great things going on at our school. We also shared with the board the Core Values of our school, which I’d love to share here with you:
- Every student deserves the opportunity for a Real Hope and a Bright Future. It is our job to ensure that every student be given the skills to be successful in the 21st century, and the opportunity to pursue their dreams and goals effectively.
- EQ (Emotional Intelligence) is just as important as IQ. When students leave our doors, we want them to understand and respect differences among their peers, to read people and situations effectively, so that they can lead our society and influence others in a positive way. Some initiatives in this direction include: The Harbor, Freshman Leadership Academy, and #OneBG
- Inspire, Equip, and Unleash. These three words are placed in our conference room, and remind us every time we meet of this leadership principle. Our greatest resource at BGHS is our people, both staff and students. We will lead in a way the Inspires and Equips our people, before Unleashing them to make a difference both at school, and outside our walls.
A special thanks to our teacher and student presenters last night, Jeff Vlk and Kate Glass representing the BGenuis Collaboratory, Karen Roberts with students Greg Harner, Jacquelyn Molloy, Shayna Reznikov, and Nicole Relias representing Entrepreneurship, and Kip North with students Dasha Ignatova, Jacqueline Bickhaus, Jack Vaselaney, Tyler Rundquist, Danielle Allaire, and Jack Pontarelli representing Elevate.
Upcoming Dates
Parent’s Needed for District 214 Focus Group!
As part of High School District 214's continued effort to expand access to early college credits, District 214 is considering new opportunities that could include online learning through a major university. We are looking to hear from 15-20 parents of Buffalo Grove High School juniors regarding this idea, potential challenges, and other opportunities that enhance student success.
This focus group would meet for roughly 45-minutes, beginning at 6:00pm prior to the BGPA meeting in the Community Room on Wednesday, October 19, and light refreshments will be provided. The ideal candidates would be parents of sophomores juniors who are not enrolled currently in Advanced Placement classes but would be interested in other options for earning early college credit.

BGHS in the News
Nonprofit backs Buffalo Grove High program

In the spring of 2016, Elevate, a student-led empowerment program that encourages healthy life choices, was implemented at Buffalo Grove High School. Elevate is patterned after John Underwood's nationally-renowned Life of an Athlete program, which was presented at the high school in early 2016. A parent night is coming up for Northwest Suburban High School District 214 parents to learn more about empowerment programs and how their students can benefit from them. Read Story
Trustees To Take Closer Look At Buffalo Grove High School

Exciting things are happening at Buffalo Grove High School this semester.
Township HIgh School Dist. 214 board members are expected to tour the new Literacy Lab at Buffalo Grove, 1100 W. Dundee Rd., tonight (Thursday) during a district workshop meeting. According to Dist. 214 Media Manager Jennifer Delgado, these meetings are scheduled twice a year to “give the schools an opportunity to talk about initiatives and give updates.” Read Story
Buffalo Grove High athletes launch healthy-living initiative

It's not unusual to see brown bags hanging from the hallway ceiling at Buffalo Grove High School (BGHS). The brown bags represent the program in which students there can get an after-school meal containing healthy food items. The program is part of ELEVATE, a healthy-lifestyle system that the school has implemented. A photo of the bags and the options of food they can contain are on the group's Twitter feed. Read Story

1. What is your name? Sarah Manos
2. What department have you/ do you work in? I teach Spanish 1 in the World Languages department.
3. How long have you been working at BG? This is my first year at BG and I am so excited to be here!
4. Where did you go to high school? I went to Prospect High School.
5. What part of working at BG do you find the most rewarding? The most rewarding part of being a teacher is seeing the growth my students make. I also love getting to know my students and having a positive relationship with them.
6. What is something unique about you? I love to travel! I have traveled all throughout Central America (including Nicaragua four times), Mexico, and I’ve also been to Spain. I love to learn about different cultures and then bring my experiences back into the classroom to share with my students!
7. What activities or clubs do you coach/ sponsor? I’m an assistant coach for the girls’ swim team, and I also sponsor an Advisory class for freshmen.
